Steven Robert Caldwell

May 28, 1953 - May 25, 2023

We mourn the loss of Steve Caldwell, who recently passed away on May 25, 2023. Steve was a crucial part of Horizon High School's early years, serving as the treasurer from 2006 to 2017. He was instrumental in developing the funding collaborative plan with MMSD which provided Horizon with the ability to weather financial storms and not have to lay off our valuable and essential staff.

Obituary published in Wisconsin State Journal August 5, 2023

Steven Robert Caldwell passed away unexpectedly on May 25, 2023, just days before his 70th birthday.

Steve was born May 28, 1953, in Savannah, GA, the son of Ruth Ann Hoge and Robert Vernon Caldwell. Steve graduated from Benton Harbor High School class of 1971. Shortly afterwards, Steve joined the US Airforce where he obtained the rank of Sergeant, serving for five years prior to honorably discharging in 1979. He spent all five years at Hickman Airforce Base in Oahu, HI, which prompted Steve's enduring love for the Hawaiian Islands. Steve finished his bachelor's degree while in Hawaii at Chaminade University of Honolulu, after which he completed his Master's in accounting at Central Michigan University.

Having obtained his CPA license while working at Deloitte and Touche out of graduate school, Steve then began a nearly 40-year career in healthcare finance, reaching heights that included serving as Chief Financial Officer at Dean Health Systems/SSM in Wisconsin for 20 years.

Steve's true passion was for his family by whom he is survived, including beautiful daughters: Megan Stafford and Marissa Carey; beloved grandchildren: Layla Stafford and Lucy Semanas; son-in-law, Alex Carey; his treasured canine companion, Baxter; and Steve's ex-wife and forever friend, Rhonda Caldwell.

Steve was passionate about using his financial expertise to help others and volunteered on boards as finance officer for Horizon High School, Connections Counseling, and other non-profits. Steve loved RV'ing across-country, including from Madison to Alaska, visiting National Parks, and watching whatever he could of his granddaughters' athletic contests and performances in Madison.

Those who wish to remember Steve in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Recovery Foundation in Madison, which held a special place in Steve's heart.
