WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL
“I know first-hand that recovery from addiction is most difficult for adults, and even more for adolescents. My only sibling, my older brother, struggled with alcoholism for over 30 years and died at the age of 52 from heart failure. If there is anything I can do to help students in need learn to live healthy and productive lives, I must try. Horizon High School provides that opportunity for them in a safe, supportive environment.”

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL
“I really believe in the mission and goals of Horizon High School. We lost our son, CJ Norwell, to mental illness and addiction on May 18, 2013. CJ’s issues began in high school. If he would have had access to a school like Horizon, we might have had a different outcome.”

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL
“Spending twenty+ years in a high school, I know the pressures on students to “fit in”. HHS creates a space for students to follow their own best instincts, and have a community supporting their growth. Traditional high schools don’t have this capacity. Instruction and success have to meet students “where they are.” Horizon is this place.”
Mitch Goettl
Assistant Director of State Relations, UW-Madison
MPPA - Northwestern University
BA - UW-Madison
Joined Horizon Board of Directors, 2024
WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL
“I give to Horizon High School because I believe all students, regardless of their backgrounds or struggles, deserve a chance to succeed. Substance abuse can create a unique set of challenges for young people, especially at this crucial stage in their lives. Horizon has stepped up as Wisconsin's only recovery high school to provide these students a healthy, safe, and supportive environment to beat addiction and set themselves up for success.”

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL
I give my time to Horizon High School because my unique life experiences and commitment to mental health and recovery allow me to connect with students who often feel marginalized. I’m driven to create a supportive environment where every student feels seen and valued. By contributing to Horizon, I’m not only advocating for students’ well-being but also fulfilling a personal goal to be the kind of support I once needed.
